Nail Fungus Infections: A General Overview – Part 1

Are you thinking you might have an infection of the nails?

It is possible. But don’t make that conclusion until you read this two-part series of articles giving you a general overview of nail fungus infections. In this series, you’ll learn what nail fungus infection is, what causes it, its cure and treatment, and preventive measures.

Nail fungus also is referred to as onychomycosis. It is caused by tiny fungus organisms that can be easily contracted anywhere. If you’ve got it, rest assured that you are not alone – estimates are that more than 2 million people in Canada have it, while more than 10 million people have it in the United States.

Nail fungus infections are hard to spot early on. They become obvious only when they are fully established under the nails.

Then they appear as a yellow spot that gradually spreads until it infects all parts of the nail. At this point it is possible for the infection to spread to all the other toe and finger nails.

It is easy for the fungus to survive in the toenails because it is a very habitable environment for it to grow in. This is because most people wear shoes and socks, a warm, moist, dark environment that provides the fungus with an optimum breeding ground.

Please note that nail fungus infections are infectious and can spread from one person to another.

You can contact the fungus from other people when you share, for example, public shower stalls, locker rooms and bathrooms.

These places are usually moist, and people who have the fungus can walk around barefooted. You can pick up the fungus that gets deposited on the floor just by walking barefooted across the floor. In such public places, make it a point to wear sandals or flip flops. Never go barefooted.

The fungus also is contractible from nail files and emery boards. That’s the reason it is not good hygiene to share your nail files with other people.
