What Do You Know about Warts?

A lot of people probably don’t realize that a virus is responsible for the painless appearance of warts on the skin.

These growths generally do not cause any harm, other than the embarrassment and disfigurement the unsightly growths can cause. On occasion some people may notice a little discomfort or itching sensation, especially if they have warts on their feet.

Although many people believe that there is only one type of wart, there are actually several. The most common wart is the one that most often is seen on a person's hands. These can form on any part of a person's body, however.

Warts that appear on the sole of a person's foot are known as Plantar warts. Warts that are often found around or under a person's toenails or fingernails are known as Periungual and Subungual warts.

Warts that most frequently occur on the forehead or face of children are known as Flat warts. Warts that form between a person's thighs and on and around the genitals are known as Genital warts.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms that a person may experience if warts begin to develop of various areas of their skin are as follows:

  • Skin that surrounds the actual growth will often become either lighter or darker.
  • Growths that form underneath or around the toenails or fingernails that are rough in texture.
  • Bumps or raised lesions of the skin that can be raised, flat, small or hard.
  • Growths that form on the soles of a person's feet that appear to either be flat or slightly raised from the skin, round or oval, rough in texture and painful when pressure is applied.
  • Several smooth, small-sized lesions of the skin that are generally flat and appear on a person's arms, legs, cheeks or forehead.

Although in a majority of cases these types of growths do not cause a person to experience any kind of pain or discomfort, it can occur if the growths happen to develop in areas that are constantly in contact with friction or rubbing of the person's clothing or shoes. In this case, walking can sometimes become painful and difficult.

In many cases these growths will go away on their own, and a person won’t have to worry about seeking medical treatment. However, it can take as long as a few years before a person notices an improvement.

Although the growths or warts that form on one person can spread to different areas of his or her own body, it is uncommon for them to spread to another person. This is, of course, except in the case of genital warts, which are contagious.

There are a variety of different medications that can be purchased in over-the-counter form that are very effective treatments for warts. There are also special devices that can be used to relieve much of the discomfort that is caused by warts that form on a person's feet.

Voltaire (and your grandmother) recognized long ago that humor and laughter are good for you. You've probably noticed yourself that you simply feel better after a good belly laugh. The problem, of course, is that your sense of humor generally abandons you right when you need it the most – on the tough days. But if you manage to bring your sense of humor to your daily conflicts on your job, your relationship with your spouse and children, and your health or financial problems, you'll go a long way toward improving the quality of your life; and you'll boost your physical health and well-being. – Paul E.
